Impaired waters in New Jersey.

New Jersey reported 1,888 assessed waters to EPA. 1,810 of them are impaired — a designated use is not being supported — and 1,696 remain on the 303(d) list, still awaiting a cleanup plan. Those two figures differ because a water leaves the list when its plan is written, not when it gets better. Across the subbasins reaching New Jersey, 94% of subwatersheds contain any assessed water at all; the rest have not been looked at.

24 of the 425 subwatersheds in these subbasins contain no assessed water and are drawn in grey. That is not a clean bill of health — it is the absence of one. Clean Water Act assessment is done by the states, on their own schedules and budgets, and no state assesses everything.

What is wrong

Why New Jersey's waters are listed.

EPA groups every cause of impairment into 36 categories. These are the ones New Jersey reported most, counted by how many impaired waters carry each. A single water usually carries several.

Where the listings concentrate.

The HUC12 subwatersheds in and around New Jersey intersected by the most waters still on the 303(d) list. A single listed river crosses several subwatersheds and is counted in each, so these are not counts of distinct waters.

Reading it

What these listings mean.

The three things worth understanding before drawing a conclusion from this map.

Unassessed is not clean

Clean Water Act assessment is done by the states, on their own budgets. Roughly half the country's subwatersheds contain no assessed water at all, and a water nobody has tested is not a water known to be safe. Everything on this page is a share of what has been assessed, and the not-assessed share is shown next to it for exactly that reason.

Impaired is not the 303(d) list

A water is impaired when a designated use — swimming, fishing, drinking water supply, aquatic life — is not being supported. It sits on the 303(d) list only while it is still awaiting a cleanup plan, a TMDL. Once that plan is written the water comes off the list and is still impaired. So the listed figure is the regulatory backlog, and the impaired figure is the state of the water; they are not two views of one number.

Not a regulatory record

Driftwise re-serves EPA's ATTAINS data from a copy we refresh; we do not make assessments, and states update theirs on multi-year cycles. For the authoritative record of any water in New Jersey, use EPA's How's My Waterway or New Jersey directly.

SEE IT IN ACTION

One platform for three monitoring programs.

Run a mark-recapture program, coordinate a multi-partner invasive species response, or manage the waterway program for a state park or conservation nonprofit. Bring your own program to the demo and we'll run Driftwise on it, live.

Get started

Scope a pilot for your program.

Tell us about your program — a watershed, an infestation, a trail system. We'll walk through how a field record becomes the report your agency and funders sign off on.

The call

A working call, not a pitch

We spend the time on your actual program — the data you have now and the report you owe.

Onboarding
